What are varicose veins? Varicose veins are enlarged, abnormal veins that are most commonly found in the legs and feet. Our upright stature is a factor and gravity plays a role, specifically in the legs and feet. The veins become enlarged, dilated and overfilled with blood. For some people, varicose veins are only a cosmetic concern, while many suffer aches, pain, discomfort and other symptoms.
What causes varicose veins? Varicose veins affect half of all people over the age of 50, and around 20% of all adults. It’s a common condition, and the risk factors increase with age, family history, obesity, jobs that require a great deal of sitting or standing and female gender. Pregnancy is factor in the development of varicose veins in women. Varicose veins may also be the result of a heart valve problem or clotting problems in the veins of the lower body. Varicose veins occur when the one-way valves in the vein that prevent blood from flowing backwards fail, and, instead of the blood flowing upward to your heart, it collects in the vein. Varicose veins most often occur in the legs because they are the extremities that are farthest from the heart, and gravity makes it more difficult for blood to flow upward.
What are spider veins? Spider veins are a common, mild variation of varicose veins that are smaller and found closer to the skin’s surface. Spider veins may be red or blue. They occur mostly on the legs, but can also be found on the face or other parts of the body. Spider veins can vary in size. They get their name because they often look like a spider’s web.
What treatments are available? Advanced technology makes it possible for most treatments to be done in the Maffei Vein Center with little discomfort, and allowing you to return home after your procedure. Procedures are done to either close or remove the varicose veins. Blood will then start flowing through other veins. There are different treatments for specific varicose vein issues and may involve the use of lasers, sclerotherapy (the injection of an agent into the vein), or microsurgery. The specific procedure will depend on a careful and complete evaluation prior to any treatment.
